How Quitting Social Media Transformed my Political Sensitivity

I don't have to perform for a side, exhibit symbolism of my allegiance, or cloud my focus with an incessant news cycle anymore. There's life beyond political tribalism.

This is the second of a four-part video series on life after social media, the first of which you can watch here. Stay tuned for the final two videos, where I’ll discuss the effect quitting social media had on my friendships and potential.

Today, we’re talking politics. More precisely, a sense and performance of politics. The sense could be broken down as the catastrophic thinking we sometimes fall into as we consume a feed full of headlines and rage clips daily.

The performance could then be described as the virtue we feel forced to display to our peers. This ‘display-only’ flavor of virtue is often tied to the political side we believe holds the cure to our national malaise. An absence of the right performance cues and symbols often leads to manifold cancellations in the real world—professional, romantic, platonic, familial, you name it.

We don’t have to play this game. The political echo chambers we’re trapped in erode our sanity and have little effect on the governing powers that be. If you’re curious about how social media and politics have affected me in the past, I’d recommend checking out this piece:
